BORN HULL 1889. SON OF THOMAS JAMES ASHTON & MARTHA (DRY), OF 9 ANN'S PLACE, CHAPMAN STREET, HULL.
HE MARRIED ON 14/02/1914 AT ST MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH. HIS WIFE KITTY ASHTON LIVED AT 3 HARCOURT TERRACE, BUCKINGHAM STREET, HULL AND 11 FILEY TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL. THEY HAD TWO SMALL DAUGHTERS - MARY AND KATHLEEN. HE WORKED AS A FISH DOCK LABOURER BEFORE THE WAR. ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 05/01/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 02/07/1915. WOUNDED IN ACTION ON 27/09/1915. KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, AGED 27.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, KATHERINE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM 15/08/1916.
HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE COURTNEY STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR. Hull Daily Mail 10 October 1916.
HIS BROTHER, LANCE CORPORAL, JAMES ASHTON 2ND EYR WAS KILLED AT ST JULIEN, ON 23/04/1915.
