HE ENLISTED IN MANCHESTER. SERVED WITH THE 2ND/7TH LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/03/1918, AGED 29. COMMEMORATED ON THE POZIERES MEMORIAL. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MARY.
SOLDIERS DIED RECORD STATE THAT HE WAS BORN IN HULL. IT WAS MORE LIKELY KIRTON LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, FRANCIS (FRANK) ALTOFT, 20218, 6TH BORDER REGIMENT, DIED OF WOUNDS, IN MALTA, ON 28/12/1915, AGED 22.
