BORN HULL 1897. SECOND SON OF CAPTAIN, GEORGE SPENCE & MARY HOULTON SPENCE, LIVING AT 147 COLTMAN STREET. ONE OF FOUR CHILDREN, INCLUDING TWO SISTERS, LOUISA AND HETTIE. HIS FATHER WAS A MASTER MARINER. EDUCATED AT HOLY TRINITY CHOIR SCHOOL. AN OFFICE BOY.
WILLIAM ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS RIFLEMAN, 12752, 21ST KINGS ROYAL RIFLE CORP. KILLED IN ACTION, AT THE SOMME, ON 17/09/1916, AGED 19. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 06/10/1916. *
HIS ONLY BROTHER, GEORGE HENRY SPENCE, SURVIVED THE WAR AT SEA, ONLY TO BE KILLED AT SEA, DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, ON 22/01/1941, AGED 57.
