BORN HULL 1891. SECOND SON OF MRS ELEANOR & THE LATE R H CANNELL OF 9 CLIFFORD STREET, HORNSEA. ONLY HAD ONE OLDER BROTHER - ROLAND. WALTER WAS UNMARRIED AND HAD NO CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A HOUSE FURNISHER ASSISTANT. LIVED WITH HIS GRANDMOTHER ELLEN SEDON, AT 263 SPRING BANK AND 1 CLAREMONT TERRACE, DAY STREET, HULL. WALTER ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS ON 16/11/1914. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 154 LBS AND OF 'GOOD' PHYSIQUE. HE SERVED IN EGYPT FROM 29/12/1915 AND WENT TO FRANCE ON 8/3/1916. ON 29/6/1916. HE WAS PROMOTED SERGEANT IN THE FIELD. ON 3/9/1916 HE REQUESTED TO REVERT TO A PRIVATE SOLDIER AS HE DID NOT FEEL CAPABLE OF PERFORMING NCO DUTIES. HE WAS TRIED BY COURT MARTIAL AND DEMOTED TO L/CPL. ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL ON 7/05/1917 WITH A SPRAINED RIGHT ANKLE (ACCIDENT). POSTED TO 22ND NFUS (60319), ON 29/93/1918. RE-APPOINTED TO PAID RANK OF SGT. ON 4/07/1918. REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION ON 10/09/1918. HE WAS 27 YEARS OLD WHEN HE DIED.
