JOHN EDWARD HODGSON
England
Born Marton, Yorkshire, 1891. Son of William Hodgson (1862-1913) and Isabella Sweeting (1862-1904). Son of a gardener. One of eight children. An apprentice brick layer. He enlisted Middlesbrough, Yorks. Served as Sapper 40366. 62nd Field Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 18th September 1917.
He is commemorated at Messines Ridge British Cemetery. I.B.36. His army effects were left to sisters, Dorothy, Bessie and Mary J, and brother Henry Thomas Hodgson. Another brother, Private, 35406, William James Hodgson, 1st/7th Northumberland Fusilier, was killed on 24/10/1917, aged 20.
His name is listed on the Sproatley Village memorial. One of 61 men form the Sproatley who served in the Great War, 13 of which died.
