BORN HULL 1886. SON OF WILLIAM HIGGINS (1854-1938) & DOROTHY YEAMAN, OF 81, SIDMOUTH STREET, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL. HE HAD BROTHERS, HERBERT AND GEORGE HIGGINS AND SIX SISTERS.
HE MARRIED ON 29/10/1910, AT ST JOHNS CHURCH, NEWLAND. HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH EMMA (ELLIOT) AND SON HERBERT (BORN 10/02/1911), LIVED AT 12, GRANVILLE VILLAS, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS) AND 3, MARSHALL STREET, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL.
EMPLOYED AS A GAS STOKER FOR THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT COMPANY, HULL.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 15/12/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 23/08/1918. SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 10/09/1918, AGED 32.
HIS WIFE FOUND HERSELF IN FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY AS HER HUSBAND WAS MISSING FOR SOME TIME AND NO PENSION WAS PAID. SHE MOVED TO 3, MARSHALL STREET, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL. SHE WAS EVENTUALLY AWARDED A WEEKLY PENSION OF 20 SHILLINGS FOR HER SELF AND SON.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST MARYS CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
