BORN HULL 1891. SON OF FRED & MARY ELIZABETH MATTHEWS. (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS) A BOILER MAKER'S APPRENTICE.

HE SERVED IN THE 3RD COLDSTREAM GUARDS. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT LOOS, ON 08/10/1915, AGED 24.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/11/1915 WITH A PHOTOGRAPH. IT REPORTS THAT PTE. MATTHEWS, WAS A BOMBER, WHO HIMSELF WAS KILLED BY A BOMB BLAST DURING A GERMAN ATTACK. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE CHEST ON THE 8TH OCTOBER AND DIED OF WOUNDS LATER THAT DAY.

HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 06/11/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE CHILTERN STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL

HE LEFT BROTHERS, WILLIAM, CHARLES AND FRED MATTHEWS.
