Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL ALBERT MALLORY 23963. Born June 1886 in North Burton, East Yorkshire Albert was the eldest of seven children to Edward and Jane Mallory of 82 Mill Street, Malton. The 1911 Census has him working as a Servant on a farm at Kirby Grindalythe where he appears to have been a Horseman in the stables. Albert married Annie Elizabeth Smith at Leake Church near Thirsk on 20th July 1913 and the couple set up home at 6, Patricks Lane, Hawthorne Avenue, Hull where they raised two sons, John and George. By this point his job was somewhat more dangerous in that he was a Chargeman working with explosives. He seems to have been in no rush to leave his family and eventually joined the army when he had to, in February 1916. He originally went in to the 13th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, but was later transferred to the 10th. Albert was wounded twice, the first time in November 1916, and the second in May 1917 when he was wounded in the left cheek and returned to England where he recovered in hospital in Newhaven. He was killed in action, on 10th September 1918 as the Pals consolidated positions around Poncteau Farm. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He was 32 years old, a husband and a father. His name is listed on the Roll of Honour, at St Mary's Church, Lowgate, Hull.
