BORN HULL 1881. SON OF JOHN EDWARD PETTINGALE & SARAH ELLEN STUBLEY (1856-1915), OF 55, WALMSLEY STREET, HULL. SON OF A TOBACCO MAKER. HE WORKED AS A CHAIR MAKER.

HE MARRIED AT LINCOLN, IN 1916. HIS WIFE, INA M PASHBY, LIVED AT 96, BARMSTON STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). THEY HAD NO CHILDREN.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 01/11/1915. HE SERVED WITH THE ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS DEPOT. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 307881, 730TH COMPANY, LABOUR CORPS. DESCRIBED AS A GOOD WORKER, WELL DISCIPLINED AND STEAD MAN. HOWEVER, AFTER AN AIR RAID ON 01/08/1918, HE BECAME NERVOUS. WENT ABSENT AND WAS FOUND BY THE POLICE, TEN DAYS LATER, HANGING IN A TREE. THE VERDICT WAS SUICIDE. HE DIED OF A SELF INFLICTED WOUND, ON 17/09/1918, AGED 37.

HE LEFT A WIDOW, BROTHERS, ALBERT AND WILLIAM, AND SISTER, ALICE.
