BORN HULL 1884. SON OF HENRY & ANNIE WHITFIELD. STEVEDORE LABOURER. BOARDED AT 155 WALKER STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 10/07/1901, AGED 18. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 125 LBS WEIGHT 32.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR. EX 8083, NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS, SOLDIER BEFORE THE WAR. SERVED FOR 7 YEARS IN THE REGULAR ARMY AND 5 YEARS IN THE RESERVES. SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICA, MAURITIUS AND INDIA. RE-ENLISTED ON THE 13/08/1914, WHEN WAR BEGAN. PROMOTED TO SERGEANT. POSTED TO THE DARDENELLES, ON 10/07/1915. DIED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 19/08/1915, AGED 31. COMMEMORATED ON THE HEELS MEMORIAL, TURKEY. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MARRIED SISTERS, MRS HARRIET G CLARKE, AND ROSETTA, HIS BROTHER, JOHN LEE WHITFIELD, AND STEP MOTHER, ALICE.

HIS BROTHER, JOHN WAS LATER KILLED IN THE WAR.
