Background

Born North Kelsey, Lincolnshire, 1880. Son of John Charles (1847-1915) and Louisa Charles (1848-1901). He had four brothers and three sisters. Worked with his father as a builder. Resided with his widowed father at 34 Wyndham Street, Hull (1911 Census). He enlisted in Hull. Served with the 1/4th East Yorkshires. Killed at the Somme, on 10/09/1916, aged 35. His army effects were shared between all his siblings.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. He is recorded as Killed on the Norwood Street, Roll of Honour (HDM 27/10/1916)
