Born 1979. Son of Robert William Batty (1855-1933) and Jane Filby (1856-1927), of 42 Parrott Street, Hull. He had one brother, Walter.

We was a Certificated Assistant Schoolmaster. Described as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 37-39 inch chest, Church of England religion.

He married, Lillian Winningham (1882-1962), on 20 May 1899, at the Hull Registry Office, Parliament Street, Hull. They had one son, Bernard, born 23/09/1907. They lived at 165, Belvoir Street, Hull (War Pension address).

He enlisted in Hull, 0n 10/12/1915, aged 36 years and 11 months. Served as a Gunner and Bombardier, in the East Riding, Royal Garrison Artillery. Posted to France, on 11/02/1918. Returned to England, on 26/04/1918. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Died of Brights Disease, on 20/08/1920, aged 41 (War Pension records).
