BORN BEVERLEY 07/05/1896. SON OF GEORGE ROBERT (1858-1922) & ZILLAH MATHERS (1860-1933), OF 110 NORWOOD, BEVERLEY. YKNOWN AS "ERIC". OUNGEST OF THREE CHILDREN. ATTENDED ST MARY'S SCHOOL, BEVERLEY. WAS A SERGEANT IN THE CHURCH LADS BRIGADE, BEVERLEY. WORKED IN THE GROCERY TRADE AND AS A COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER IN THE TEA BUSINESS. HE BECAME A BANK CLERK AND WORKED FOR BARCLAY'S BANK IN DRIFFIELD.

HE ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY, ON 08/02/1915. JOINED THE 18TH ROYAL FUSILIERS (1ST PUBLIC SCHOOL) BATTALION. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 14/11/1915. WHEN THE BATTAILON WAS DISBANDED HE WAS SENT TO OFFICER TRAINING SCHOOL AND COMMISSIONED IN SEPTEMBER 1916, JOINING THE MACHINE GUN CORPS. HE SAW ACTION ON THE SOMME, ARRAS, CAMBRAI. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND WITH TRENCH FEVER. HE RETURNED TO THE FRONT. HE WAS KILLED BY A SHELL EXPLOSION, ON 08/10/1918, AGED 22.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE WW1 MEMORIAL & PARK STREET WW1 ROLL OF HONOUR.

HIS NAME IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE NORWOOD STREET WW1 MEMORIAL, BEVERLEY & THE BEVERLEY WW1 MEMORIAL, HENGATE.
