Frederick Ernest Carter, AIF

BORN HULL 15/07/1890. SON OF WALTER CHARLES CARTER & HANNAH MARY (DONKIN), OF 4 SWANN STREET, HULL. EX FRUIT MERCHANT, ASSISTING IN THE FAMILY FRUIT BUSINESS. HAD SPENT 4 YEARS WITH THE EAST RIDING YEOMANRY. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND LIVED AT 016 ARGYLE STREET, HULL, WHERE HE HAD MANY FRIENDS.

HE EMIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA IN 1912, TO LEARN SHEEP FARMING. WORKED AS A FIREMAN. ENLISTED AT ENOGGERA, QUEENSLAND, ON 02/01/1915, AGED 23 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 7.5 INCHES TALL, 10 STONE, 10 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST, GREY EYES, DARK BROWN HAIR, AND CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION. SERVED IN GALLIPOLI WHERE HE WAS EVACUATED WITH DYSENTERY. SERVED IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM. DIED OF WOUNDS, RECEIVED IN ACTION, ON 19/08/1917, AGED 26. HIS PERSONAL EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WALTER, IN HULL. THEY INCLUDED A BIBLE, PRAYER BOOK, DICTIONARY, POCKET BOOK, PAIR OF BROKEN SPECTACLES, MASONIC REGALIA IN A CASE, PRIVATE PAPERS AND PHOTOS. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 25/09/1917. *

Driver, Frederick Ernest Carter served with the 49th Battery, 13th Brigade Australian

Field Artillery. His Service Number was 899. Frederick was born in 1891 in Hull. His occupation was assisting in family fruit business in Hull. Frederick eventually decided to emigrate to Australia, where his occupation was a Fireman. He served in Gallipoli, France & Belgium, and died of wounds, received in action, on the 19th August 1917. He is buried in the Vlamartinge New Military Cemetery near Ypres, Belgium and is remembered on a large memorial to the Carter family in South Cave Cemetery. The Gallipoli Campaign was one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the war and a major Allied failure. In Turkey, it is regarded as a defining moment in the nation's history: a final surge in the defence of the motherland as the Ottoman Empire crumbled. The struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War of Independence and the founding of the Republic of Turkey eight years later.
