BORN BEVERLEY, 26/07/1895. ELDEST SON OF HARRY ELLERKER ROSS (1867-1933) AND EVA WELBURN (1866-1945), OF WHITTINGTON HOUSE, 29, HIGHGATE, BEVERLEY (WW1 MEDAL ROLL ADDRESS).
HE WAS KNOWN AS 'JACK'. SON OF A NEWSPAPER REPORTER. THE ELDEST OF SIX CHILDREN. HE HAD THREE YOUNGER BROTHERS AND TWO YOUNGER SISTERS.
HE WAS A COLOUR SERGEANT IN THE BEVERLEY CHURCH LAD'S BRIGADE. EDUCATED AT ST MARY'S SCHOOL, BEVERLEY AND THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE. HE WORKED IN THE SURVEYOR'S DEPARTMENT FOR BEVERLEY COUNCIL.
ENLISTED BEVERLEY. FORMERLY, CORPORAL, 1868, 5TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WENT TO FRANCE, ON 18/04/1915. WOUNDED AT YPRES, ON 02/03/1916. WAS COMMISSIONED INTO THE ANSON BATTALION, ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION, ON 22/11/1916. SPENT THREE WINTERS IN THE FRONT LINE & WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AGED 23. BURIED IN FRANCE.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 16/10/1918.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WAR MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.
HE LEFT WIDOW, EDITH M. RAMSEY, WHO HE MARRIED AT BEVERLEY IN 1916.
Lt. Jack Ross, R.N. and Lt. Eric Mathers, Machine Gun Corps, were killed only two weeks before the Armistice. Both had attended St. Mary's Boys School together, both had Church Lads Brigade decorations and both fell on the same day - 08/10/1918.
