Hull Pals Memorial Post. Private, RICHARD JAMES GEORGE GRIMMER, 11/777. Born in Caistor, Lincolnshire in October 1876, Richard's records are a little convoluted and his past is not easy to piece together. It appears he was the eldest son of James and Teresa Grimmer of 95, Rosamund Street, Hessle Road, Hull and it could well be that he was married to Kate Grimmer....though she only appears on the 1901 Census and there is no Marriage Certificate. I think he was a Fish Packer on the docks. Hessle Road was certainly the centre of that trade back in the day. What I do know is that he enlisted at City Hall and joined the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment; that he served in first Egypt and then the trenches of the Western Front; and that he was seriously wounded and evacuated back to England. Richard died of wounds on 17th September 1916, at St. George's in Hanover Square, London and was transported back to Hull to be buried near his family home. He is interred in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Hessle Road; he was 39 years old.
