BORN NOTTS 21/11/1896. SON OF JOHN WARDLE (1865-1927) AND JANE SELINA SUMMERS (1870-1938), OF 4 PALM COTTAGES, MANSFIELD STREER, NOTTINGHAM. SON OF A CARTER. SECOND OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS AS A JOBBING CARPENTER, UNTIL HE JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY. (1911 CENSUS). HIS FIANCEE FANNY CUTHBERT LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS (HDM 02/01/1919). HE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL NAVY, ON 15/07/1913. AN ORDINARY SEAMAN. SERVING ON THE DESTROYER “HMS LYNX”. HE WAS KILLED BY A MINE EXPLOSION OFF MORAY FIRTH, ON 01/09/1915, AGED 18. 70 CREW WERE LOST. THERE WERE ONLY 20 SURVIVORS.
