Born Bishop Burton, Beverley, 1890. Eldest son of John Curtis (1866-1946) and Mercy Renwick (1867-1947), of Bishop Burton, Beverley. He had two brothers and five sisters. Worked as a Farm labourer.
He was a member of the East Riding Constabulary, and is commemorated on their Memorial Plaque at St Mary’s Church, Beverley.
Enlisted Beverley. Served as Lance Corporal in the 8th Seaforth Highlanders. Killed in action, on 22/06/1916, aged 26. He is buried in France. His grave inscription reads, “One of the Best”.
His brother, Private, Harold Curtis, 42833, 7th West Yorkshire regiment, was killed in action, on 16/04/1918, aged 19 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
The brothers are commemorated on the Bishop Burton WW1 Memorial.
