the muddy banks of the River Hull. Sculcoates existed before the Norman conquest and remained a small hamlet for hundreds of years, separated from Hull by open fields and connected to Cottingham by a lane that ran along Queens Road, Newland Avenue and Cottingham Road. It seems to have been a difficult place to live, prone to flooding, disease and often poverty stricken. The first mention of St Mary’s Church is in 1232, located on the junction of Air Street and Bankside today. A disused churchyard still remains. A 1337 account shows that, Sculcoates had 19 adults paying the Poll Tax and by the Sixteenth Century, Sculcoates only had seven taxpayers. By 1774 Sculcoates had a population of 90 families. Between 1870-1914, an economic boom in Hull, saw the City’s population explode and the Sculcoates Parish, was quickly absorbed within the expanding City. Its position of the River Hull meant that, Sculcoates was well placed for trade, fishing and ancillary industries. However, it remained a very poor area, with St Marys founding a workhouse in 1844 and expanding its cemetery in 1867, which contains many pauper graves. By the 1880’s, the St Marys Parish covered 738 acres, stretching from Clough Road to the North, Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue to the West and Spring Bank and George Street, to the South . The River Hull marked the East side of the Sculcoates boundary. St Mary’s Church which had been flooded and rebuilt several times, soon became surrounded by oil seed mills, paint works and chemical factories. With the parish population migrating towards new housing around Beverley Road, a new St Marys Church was built on Sculcoates Lane, in 1916 about half a mile away. Still used today, St Mary’s, Sculcoates, contains many older memorials from the original Church.

Cruficix WW1 Memorial, outside St Mary’s Church, Sculcoates, Hull

St Mary’s WW1 memorial was unveiled on 19th October 1920. It takes the form of a tall, oak, Cross, with a figure of Christ, mounted on a stone base, outside the church entrance. There is a tablet attached to the base of the crucifix, which bears the inscription, “The names of those commemorated are found on the pillars inside the church.”

There are 176 names, inscribed in random order, on the supporting stone columns, inside the church. Only names are recorded. They is no reference to the man’s regiment, or date of death and they are not listed in any alphabetical order or particular pattern. It seems that the stone mason carved the names as they were provided. For convenience, the names of each servicemen, has been placed in alphabetical order on a spreadsheet above, with their date of death, age and home address. An analysis of the memorials shows that :-

* The first Sculcoates’ Casualty was, Private, James Cox, 1st Coldstream Guards, killed on 20/10/1914, aged 32. The last known death was Fred Rennardson, of the Labour Corps, who died in Hull on 20/11/1924, aged 43.

* Most were ordinary ranks, including 111 Privates. There are only three Officers and eight NCO’s in the full list of names..

* The youngest to die was Leonard Instone, aged 17. The eldest, was William Costello, aged 53.

* There are ten sets of brothers killed on the memorial. They include the two Bickers brothers killed within a month of each other in 1918. Three Johnson brothers, Three Richardson brothers and Three Driver, brothers.

* Alfred Handson and John William Handson, were father and son.

* Bernard Tether and George Henry Saul, were Brothers in Law

* Private, Leonard Lonsdale’s, father was the Church Warden at St Mary’s

* There are 21 Teenagers listed on the memorial. Where known, there were three deaths in 1914, seventeen, in 1915, forty, in 1916, fifty seven, in 1917, forty six, deaths in 1918 and four post war deaths.

* Two men died at Gallipoli, two died at Jutland; another two at the battle Loos. Six “Hull Pals” were killed on the Somme, at Serre, on 13/11/1916, three men died the same day, on 23/04/1917. and six men died at Oppy Wood, on 03/05/1917.

* Four men died in November 1918, the last month of the war and Henry Binks died on the day the war ended.

* Sixty Seven men have no known grave. They are commemorated on Memorials to the Missing, at Thiepval (17); Arras, (15); Ypres Menin Gate (8) and Tyne Cott (6). Most men with graves are buried in France and Belgium. Eleven men on the Memorial died at home and are buried in Hull.

* The majority of men served with the East Yorkshire Regiments (72 men) including 25 men who served with the Hull Pal Battalions. Many served in other Yorkshire regiments. The soldiers, include five Guardsmen, four Royal Engineers and fifteen Artillery men. One man served with the Australian Infantry. One man fought with the Canadians. Nine of the fallen were sailors.

* Many of the men, lived in close proximity to St Mary’s Church. They came from Sculcoates Lane and surrounding streets, like Nicholson Street, Exchange Street, Epworth Street, Tunis Street and Folkestone Street across the road. Some addresses, like Bournemouth Street, Fenchurch Street, Fleet Street and Stepney Lane have largely disappeared with post war reconstruction.

* Most of the men on the memorial were born in Hull and other parts of Yorkshire. For example, George Davis was born in Sheffield, Wilfred Kirton, in Doncaster, Tom Sadler in Middlesbrough; Ernest Stamp and Clifford Smith were born in Leeds, Harold Kirk, MM, was born in Harrogate. Thomas Barton, George Skinns and Syd Parkinson were all born in London and Ernest Seabourne came from Essex.

Many of the men worked in the surrounding industries, the Gas works on Clough Road, the Needlers sweet factory, on Bournemouth Street, the Hull Corporation Electricity station at the Barmston Drain, the Hull and Barnsley Railway goods yards on Temple Street and Stepney Lane. Harold Gilbert, Arthur Higgins, Walter Clappison, John Biggins and Fred Ball, all worked for the local British Gas and Light Company. The Newton brothers worked at the Air Street, Gas works. Arthur Bickers, Albert Blenkinsop, Albert Buffey, Sam Conyers, Ernest Giblin, Daniel Hussey and George Dale were Blundell’s Paint workers. Albert John Handson, Bernard Tether and Edwin Yull were Sissons’ factory men. George Saul worked at the Reckitt’s, Morley Street works. John Lill worked at the Reckitt’s Cannister factory on Stoneferry, Hull. Horace Freeman worked for the British Oil and Cake Mill. Fred Cudbertson, worked for the Bon Accord, Oil Mill. Tom Straker worked for the Britannia, Oil Mill. Arthur Wakefield, worked for Chambers & Fargas, Oil Mill. Thomas Freeman, Joseph Hathaway, Francis Moore, Alfred Nutbrown and the three Driver brothers, each worked at the local Holme’s, Tannery, on Air Street. Other men were employed in the many saw mills, cement works and flour mills that lined the River Hull. Their jobs were varied. Clarence Conkerton was a drum and keg maker. Albert Lount was a pork butcher on Lambert Street. Ernest stamp, Percy Thompson and William Usher all worked on the Hull Corporation trams.

Each of men of the St Mary’s Memorial have their own story. These can all be searched individually on this website. Some of the stories are common to many war memorials. For example, John Brough enlisted underage; Daniel Hussey had been wounded twice, before being killed; Jack Kilvington, died of wounds, after being discharged from the war. David Miller died swimming, Ernest Carrington was accidentally killed in bomb training. George Fisher died as a Turkish prisoner of war. Henry Binks and John Judge succumbed to the “Spanish” Influenza. Some died of terrible wounds, such as, Albert Barmby shot in the chest, side and legs, and Albert Earle shot in the spine. Others died quickly, like Horace Kirkman, killed by a sniper, while rescuing a wounded officer. Others, like Harold Kirk, mentioned in Dispatches and awarded the Military Medal, died bravely, aged 20.

Some men came from large families, like Edwin Butcher and Walter Rennardson who both had eleven siblings.

Others like Harold Kirk, Ernest Carrington, William Dixon, and Fred Cudbertson, were only children. Harold Kirk, MM, Horace Kirkman, Ernest Seaborne, Robert Tummon, Ernest Wright, George Saul and Jack Gelder were only sons. Ernest Ounsley was an orphan with no parents or siblings.

Many men, like John Fridlington and George Tattersall, came from connected families, living in the same Terrace. Other men were fathers with large families, such as Arthur Williams who had seven children. George Wilgeroth and George Fisher, both left six children to mourn their loss.

Some like Fred Cudbertson, had a poor military disciplinary record and received six months hard labour. Others were sportsmen, like, Arthur Wakefield who played rugby for Southcoates and John Blenkin who was a Director for Scunthorpe FC.

Snippets like these, provide some context to memorials. They are more than just a list of names. They were real people, that meant something to someone, who cared enough to include them on the St Mary’s memorial. Some like Alfred Nutbrown, was remembered by his family in repeated newspaper obituaries long after the war. The family of John William Judge, had inscribed on his war grave the words, “”NO ONE KNOWS HOW MUCH WE MISS HIM ONLY ACHING HEARTS CAN TELL”

Note: There are nine names on the memorial that cannot be traced. They are Arthur E Freeman, Arthur Milburn, Christopher Parker, Bernard Sadler, Walter Saville, and Amos Spruit. There are no CWGC records of their deaths, no war pension records that indicate that they were discharged UK soldiers and no Census records that they lived in this area of Hull. Two other names, J. Smith and W. Smith are too numerous, to find a certain match. These men could have served under different names or enlisted in other towns, fought for other Commonwealth nations or be unknown sailors lost at sea.

* There are also some errors and anomalies, on the church memorial, which are common with a long list of names. In an era of hand written records and varying accents, names could often be mis pronounced and mis recorded. Some names on the St Marys memorial are misspelt: Egglestone is Eggleton; John and Alfred Hanson, had the surname, Handson; and Edward Butcher is actually Edwin Butcher.

* In hindsight, many more names should have been added to the St Mary’s memorial, but for reasons unknown were omitted. For example, Francis Orr, is listed on the memorial, but his brother, Private, John Francis Orr, 1st EYR, killed in action, on 28/10/1914, aged 19, is not. Similarly, Thomas Sadler who died in Internment, lost his brother, James Sadler, fighting for the Canadians, Henry Binks lost two Brother in Laws, James and John Nix, but his wife did not include her brothers on the memorial.

If you think a name should be added to the spreadsheet, have any comments, or further information, please contact this website. Thank You.
