He had married a month before his death and moved to Armley, Leeds.

2) Private, Joseph Thompson, 33211, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action on 10th September 1916, aged 29. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He worked for Hull Council as an Elementary Teacher, living with his parents at 40 Durham Street, Hull (1911 Census) and later 64, Sherburn Street, Hull when war began.

4) Sergeant, William Johnson, 16th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, killed in action, on 11/07/1916. aged 30. Born in Bradford. He was an Elementary Teacher in Sheffield, and by 1914, a School Master, at Mellor School, Manchester. He married at Hull, on 05/09/1914. His wife, Florence and son, lived at 39, St Leonard’s Road, Sculcoates Lane, Hull. He enlisted at Manchester, in December 1914 and was killed at Mametz Wood, Somme, France. Also Bombardier, George William Filby, a Certifiied Schoolmaster, living at 165, Belvoir Street, Hull. He served with the 2nd East Riding, RGA and died of war aggravated injuries on 20/08/1920, aged 41.

5) There were many requests to release Hull teacher from war service – See Records relating to the mobilisation and de-mobilisation of teachers from Hull during The First World War, Ref: C TED/1/3/6/14 – 1917-18. at the Hull History Centre. Includes correspondence relating to the requested release from military service of the following teachers deployed as Army schoolmasters and gives which the regiment they were currently serving: Cpl. Evrington.

6) By 1914, Hull had 50 Council schools and 16 “Non Provided” Schools (mostly faith schools or specialist/private schools). While many Teachers enlisted when war began. Others were required to do so when Conscription was introduced in 1916. The Defence of the Realm Act required the Hull Education Committee to report on every man in their employment, aged 18-41 years. The Committee submitted to the Military Authorities, their employees name, date of birth, address, marital status, and any previous military service. (Their teaching subject or school role was not recorded). Each man was categorised on a scale of A-H, whether they were suitable for military service. Individual school returns can be viewed at the Hull History Centre (Ref C TED/1/3/16/6-13). By 21 Oct 1916, a total of 1,263 school staff in Hull had enrolled with 1,090, of these in home service units, involved in war related work.

With so many men away at war, it was difficult to recruit replacement teachers. The Education service, in Hull, fell mostly on women and elderly male Teachers, who had been rejected from military service, on age and medical grounds. Records show staff shortages and sickness in schools. It is not known how this impacted local educational standards during the war.

Few Hull teachers were exempted from war service. Mr E. Michot, a French Teacher, was forced to join up, despite the Education Committee itself requesting that he remained in post. He became an interpreter for the Royal Engineers. English teacher, Mr FR Bell (English) became 2/Lt in the 5th Gloucesters; Mr W Mattinson (Science) became a 2/Lt in the 11th Lincs; Mr H Graville (Manual Engineering) became a 1st Air Mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps; Mr I Rothfield (English & History) became Lieutenant, in the 16th Liverpool Regiment; Mr D W Rees (junior Teacher) became 2/Lt in the 3rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers; and Mr H Ask (Science) became an Admiralty Analyst.

On the 24 April 1918, the Military Service Act 1918 (Section 2), was introduced, which meant even those with exemption certificates had a duty to enrol.

Some exemptions, include, Mr A T G Kersey, Head of Engineering Department, at the Hull Technical College, who tested metals for munition workers and also gave technical advice on metals. Another exemption, was Mr Alfred Guy Smith, of 123, Park Avenue, Headmaster of the Osborne Street Deaf Centre. He was a married man, (no children), born 17 Jan 1881 and classed as “A” Condition, for military service.
