On the same day the country\u2019s armed forces invade Belgium.<br \/>\n<strong>4 August:<\/strong>\u00a0Britain declares war with Germany.<br \/>\n<strong>7 August:<\/strong>\u00a0The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) arrives in France. Two weeks later they are defeated by the German Army at the Battle of the Frontiers.<br \/>\n<strong>18 October:<\/strong>\u00a0the first Battle of Ypres begins<br \/>\n<strong>29 October:<\/strong>\u00a0trench warfare is beginning to dominate across the Western Front. Turkey enter the war on the German side.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both; font-family: Bitter, Georgia, serif; line-height: 1.3; font-size: 30px; margin-top: 25px; margin-bottom: 25px;\">1915<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 24px;\"><strong>25 April:<\/strong>\u00a0Allied forces land in Gallipoli (Turkey)<br \/>\n<strong>23 May:<\/strong>\u00a0Italy declares war on German and Austrian and enters the war on the side of the Allies.<br \/>\n<strong>5 August:<\/strong>\u00a0Germany captures Warsaw (the Polish capital) from Russian forces.<br \/>\n<strong>19 December:<\/strong>\u00a0the Allies begin their evacuation of Gallipoli. The campaign is a disaster and more than 44,000 Allied soldiers are killed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both; font-family: Bitter, Georgia, serif; line-height: 1.3; font-size: 30px; margin-top: 25px; margin-bottom: 25px;\">1916<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 24px;\"><strong>27 January:<\/strong>\u00a0Britain introduces military conscription.<br \/>\n<strong>1 July:<\/strong>\u00a0The Battle of the Somme begins. In just 4 months the British suffered around 420,000 casualties the French had 200,000 but the Germans suffered the most coming away with 500,000 casualties.<br \/>\n<strong>7 December:<\/strong>\u00a0David Lloyd George becomes the new Prime Minister of Britain.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both; font-family: Bitter, Georgia, serif; line-height: 1.3; font-size: 30px; margin-top: 25px; margin-bottom: 25px;\">1917<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 24px;\"><strong>6 April:<\/strong>\u00a0the United States enter the conflict by declaring war on Germany.<br \/>\n<strong>16 April:<\/strong>\u00a0A major French offensive on the Western Front is unsuccessful.<br \/>\n<strong>6 November:<\/strong>\u00a0Britain launches a major offensive on the Western Front and their forces begin to make some progress. Later that month British tanks are victorious at the Battle of Cambrai.<br \/>\n<strong>5 December:<\/strong>\u00a0Germany and Russia sign armistice agreement.<br \/>\n<strong>9 December:<\/strong>\u00a0British troops capture Jerusalem from Turkish forces.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both; font-family: Bitter, Georgia, serif; line-height: 1.3; font-size: 30px; margin-top: 25px; margin-bottom: 25px;\">1918<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 24px;\"><strong>3 March:<\/strong>\u00a0The treaty of Brest-Litovsk is signed with officially brings an end to the war between Russia and Germany.<br \/>\n<strong>21 March:<\/strong>\u00a0German forces make a breakthrough on the Somme.<br \/>\n<strong>9 April:<\/strong>\u00a0A German offensive begins at Flanders.<br \/>\n<strong>8 August:<\/strong>\u00a0A crucial Allied advance is successful.<br \/>\n<strong>4 October:<\/strong>\u00a0Germany ask the Allies to sign an armistice agreement.<br \/>\n<strong>30 October:<\/strong>\u00a0Turkey surrender by signing the Armistice of Mudros.<br \/>\n<strong>3 November:<\/strong>\u00a0Austria-Hungary make peace.<br \/>\n<strong>9 November:<\/strong>\u00a0Kaiser William II of Germany abdicates and Germany is declared a republic.<br \/>\n<strong>11 November:<\/strong>\u00a0Germany sign armistice agreement and the First World War is officially ended.
