{"id":251,"date":"2014-08-05T21:43:54","date_gmt":"2014-08-05T21:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ww1hull.com\/souza\/"},"modified":"2014-08-05T21:43:54","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T21:43:54","slug":"souza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ww1hull.com\/?p=251","title":{"rendered":"Hull&#8217;s Royal Navy Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/media.iwm.org.uk\/ciim5\/389\/853\/mid_000000.jpg\" alt=\"THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR\" \/><strong>Nearly 250 Hull men died in the First World War serving with the Royal Navy.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Eleven men sank with HMS Good Hope, on the 1st November 1914.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Ten died when HMS &#8216;Bulwark&#8217;, mysteriously exploded in the River Medway, on the 26th November 1914.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Fifty Eight Hull men died at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916, including 24 who sank on HMS &#8216;Queen Mary&#8217; and eight on HMS &#8216;Black Prince&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Another eleven Hull men were lost on HMS &#8216;Vanguard&#8217; when it spontaneously exploded, at the Scapa Flow Port, on 9th July 1917. The destruction of HMS &#8216;Vanguard&#8217;, remains one of the most catastrophic accidental disasters. She sank almost instantly, killing an estimated 804 men. There were only two survivors.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Many other Hull men served in local ships for the Royal Navy Reserve service. Here are some of them.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">&#8216;COMMANDER FULLERTON&#8217;<\/span> was lost on 12th December 1917, trying to protect a convoy in the North Sea.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">&#8216;EROS&#8217;<\/span>&nbsp; was mined in the North Sea <span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-decoration: underline;\">on the 8th June 1918.&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;7 lives, lost including Skipper.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #0000ff;\">HMT &#8216;EMLEY 123&#8217; <\/span><span style=\"color: #003300; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"marL5 pointer ul darkblue\" style=\"margin-left: 0.5em; cursor: pointer;\">sunk in the Firth of Forth, on 28th April 1918, with the loss of 8 crew.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">&#8216;INDUSTRIA<\/span>&#8216;, was built by Cook, Welton and Gemmell &nbsp;Ltd, Hull, 1887.
