They served in all the World&#8217;s Seas. Hull ships Crew&#8217;s often contained many sailors from abroad, who lived either on board or around the docks of Hull. Some of these overseas seamen are remembered here:-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Emanuel\u00a0KARIOTHIS<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Crete, Greece, lost on the Hull ship &#8216;Colenso&#8217; on 13\/11\/1915, aged 18 years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">George GILIMBIS<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\">, from Greece, and\u00a0<strong>George DENIS\u00a0<\/strong>from America, were both lost on the Hull ship \u2018Cambric\u2019, 31<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0October 1917<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Fireman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Paul ROMERO<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Argentina, lost on the Hull ship &#8216;Cambric&#8217; on 31\/10\/1917, aged 21. Fireman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">George DENIS<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from America, was lost on the same ship.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Seaman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Emil RUDHOLM<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Sweden, lost on the Hull ship &#8216;Etonian&#8217; on the 23\/3\/1918, aged 50 years old.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Also, Seaman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Eric OLSSON<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Gothenberg, lost on the &#8216;Toro&#8217; on 12\/4\/1917. He lived at 6 Chatham Place, Adelaide Street and was 34 years old. Fireman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">L. MONSON<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, lost on the Hull ship &#8216;Salmo&#8217; on 10\/4\/1917, aged 24, was from Norway. Another Norwegian sailor, was\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Gundar KARLSEN,<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">\u00a0lost on the &#8216;Gitano&#8217; on the 23\/12\/1918, aged 22.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Skipper,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Andrew SUMMER<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Denmark, who lived at 12 Division Road and sank with the &#8216;Mauritius&#8217; on the 17\/5\/1915.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Seaman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">A SIGHVATSON<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">\u00a0was lost on the &#8216;Calypso&#8217; on the 11\/7\/1916.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Grimur SIGMUNDSEN<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, died on the &#8216;Tummell&#8217; on 24\/2\/1916. Both were from Iceland, and lived in Hull.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Gustav SUNDVAL<\/strong>, was a Finnish salior l<span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">ost on the Steam ship&#8217; North Wales&#8217;, on 24\/10\/1916. His son Tatve, also died in the war in 1917.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22.5px;\">Seaman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.6667px; line-height: 22.5px;\">Grimur Sigmundson<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22.5px;\">, from Iceland, sank with the Steamship \u2018Tummell\u2019, on 24<\/span><sup style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22.5px;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22.5px;\">\u00a0February 1916, aged 22, (His brother Bergestein also died at sea in the Second World War).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Firemen, <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Aubee Samuel GARNER<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Bill SANDY<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, and <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Ben CAFFREY<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, all from Sierra Leone; <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">J. BROWN<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Lagos; <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Patrick CAROLAN<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Drogheda, Ireland: and <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Thomas SMITH<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from the United States, were all lost on the Hull Ship, &#8216;Hildalgo&#8217;, when it was sunk by submarine on 28\/8\/1917.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Steward,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">C. McLeod<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, from Jamaica, was lost on the &#8216;Adriatic&#8217; on 31\/10\/1916, aged 22. Fellow Jamician, Fireman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">H. Edwards<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 22px;\">, sank with the &#8216;Zara&#8217; on 13\/4\/1917, aged 44. Fieman, T Suto, lost on the&#8217;Umba&#8217;, on the 30\/4\/1918 came from Japan. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22px;\"><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Lucien Schurter<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\">\u00a0from Switzerland, was lost on the \u2018Montebello\u2019 in 1918, aged 29.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">Nicholas Souza<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\">, from Portugal, lived at 39 St Andrews Street, Hull. He sank with the \u2018Stan Hope\u2019 ship in 1917.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;\">Charles Omberg<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\">, one of many Swedes, serving on Hull ships, and lost on the \u2018Memberland\u2019 on the 15th February, 1915. His wife was from Hull and he lived at 7 Alexandra Terrace, Buckingham Street.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\">Irishmen,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\"><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.6667px; line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Patrick Molloy<\/span>,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 22px; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\">\u00a0drowned on the, \u2018Romeo\u2019 on 3<\/span><sup style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22.5px;\">rd<\/sup><span style=\"color: #282829; line-height: 22.5px;\">\u00a0March 1918.
