The Hull Western Synagogue, contains a beautiful war memorial, commemorating those from Hull’s Jewish community, lost in the war. They include:-<\/span><\/p>\n

Corporal, Harry Silverstone<\/strong>,<\/span> 9th<\/sup> Essex Regiment, died 3rd<\/sup> July 1916, aged 39. He is commemorated on the Somme memorial to the missing at Thiepval.<\/span><\/p>\n

His brother<\/span>,\u00a0Private<\/span>, Marcus Silverstone<\/span><\/strong>, 1st Royal Fusiliers, died on the 7<\/span>th<\/sup>\u00a0October 1916, aged 40, and is commemorated on the same memorial. They were the sons of Caroline and the late Barnett Silverstone, of 121 Walker Street, Hull. They were killed at the Somme, and are commemorated on the Jewish War memorial at Hull\u2019s Western Synagogue on Linnaeus Street, Hull.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Private, Abey (Abraham) Jacobs<\/strong><\/span>, 203474, 1\/4th East Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action on 19\/07\/1917, aged 20. Son of Moses and Ann Jacobs, of 7 Upper Union Street, Hull.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Hull Western Synagogue, Linnaeus street (now closed)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Listed on the same memorial, are two Jewish Officers, 2nd Lieutenant, Harold Issac Opet<\/span>,<\/strong> London Regiment, 7th Bn, (the Post Office Rifles), killed on the 23rd March 1918, during the German Spring Offensive. He was aged 30 and the son of Siegfried and Rachel Opet who ran a Draper business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, 2nd Lieutenant, <\/span>Lionel Franks<\/span><\/strong>, 8th Bn, East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘C’ Company, killed on the 5th May 1917, aged 19. He was the only son of Ben and Nellie Franks, who lived at 18 Park Avenue, Hull.
