{"id":184,"date":"2014-08-04T15:38:32","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T15:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ww1hull.com\/holmes\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T16:48:07","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T16:48:07","slug":"holmes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ww1hull.com\/?p=184","title":{"rendered":"Accidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: black; background: none 0% 0% repeat scroll white;\">Arthur James Holmes<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: black; background: none 0% 0% repeat scroll white;\"> died falling into the dry dock at Hull on 12th November 1915<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lieutenant, <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Edward Allen Kitching<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">, Royal Field Artillery, 27th Bde., was injured \u00a0when dismounting from his horse, he was thrown in front of a lorry. He died at Hull Royal Infirmary on the 8th September 1915, aged 27 years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2nd L\/t, <strong>Charles Richard Thornton-Varley<\/strong>, East Riding Royal Garrison Artillery, from Burnside, Newland Park, was killed on the 25th May 1915 when his motorcycle crashed into some Turnpike Gates. He was 28 years old and is buried in Hull Western Cemetery. (HDM 27\/05\/1915)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Marine Fireman,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Edward Chaplin<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">, of London, who drowned during an air raid alarm on the 27th November 1916. He fell overboard from his ship and was lost in Hull&#8217;s Albert Dock. \u00a0(HDM 17\/01\/1917)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Cpl,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Henry William James<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">, RFA, knocked down in Wellington Street, by a motor bus, while escorting prisoners of war after dark. He died in the Royal Albert Hospital in Woolwich, aged 30. (HDM 2\/12\/1916)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">Sgt,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19px; line-height: 22px;\">Frank Chalmers<\/strong><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">, drowned with his girlfriend in a boating accident on the River Don, on the 6<\/span><sup style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;\">\u00a0July 1917.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\"><strong>Thomas Pearson Taylor<\/strong>, was shot by a sentry at Saltburn on 21 August 1914. He died aged 32. He was son of Alderman, Thomas Shemeld Taylor, Cleveland Villas, Southcoates Lane and prominent laundry businessman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Regimental Sergeant Major, <strong>William Brown<\/strong>, DCM, 1st Royal Dragoons, died of a liver infection at Beverley, on 24th August 1914. He had served in the Boer War and is buried at St Martin&#8217;s church in Beverley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Drill Sergeant, <strong>Edgar John Gardiner<\/strong>, from Clifton Street, died of heart failure, at Hedon Racecourse, on 20th August 1914, aged 52.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Steward, <strong>Albert Dodd<\/strong>, from the steam ship &#8216;Potamac&#8217; fell over board and died in Alexandra Dock, aged 28. (Hull Times 13\/03\/1915)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\"><strong>James Herbert Dawson<\/strong>, from Summergangs Road, died falling of the pier at Petershead, in 1915.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Skipper, <strong>William Valentine Manthorpe<\/strong>, of the Hull Tugbaot &#8216;Linesman&#8217; fell in the dock basin and drownedaged 43. He lived at 3 Lily&#8217;s Grove, Subway Street (Hull Times 13\/03\/1915)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\"><strong>Thomas Craven<\/strong>, from 2 Eastbourne Street, fell overboard the &#8216;Viola&#8217;, and drowned on 21st November 1914.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282829; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 22px;\">Captain, <strong>Charles Henry Newport<\/strong>, of the steamship &#8216;Sodium&#8217; fell overboard and drowned in Ipswich in 1915.
