BORN HULL 05/02/1862. SON OF GEORGE ALTOFT (1829-1874) & ELIZABETH ANN ALTOFT (1829-1912). MARRIED ADA (SIMPSON), AT ST STEPHENS, HULL ON 07/04/1885. HE WAS A BEER HOUSE KEEPER AT THE ENGINEER’S ARMS, WATERHOUSE LANE, HULL (1891 CENSUS) AND THEN BECAME A MERCHANT SEAMAN AND SHIP’S FIREMAN. HE WAS LOST AT SEA, ON 14/04/1917, AGED 55. (THERE ARE NO CWGC RECORDS).

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 27/04/1917. HE LEFT WIDOW, ADA ALTOFT, AT 3 ALBERT AVENUE, WELLSTED STREET, HULL, AND LATER 9 HUNTINGDON STREET, HULL. ALSO CHILDREN, GEORGE, JAMES, GERTRUDE AND AMY.

HIS OTHER SON, JOHN WILLIAM ALTOFT, DIED ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘DIDO’, SUNK ON 26/02/1916, AGED 25.
